What is the workshop about?
UK clinical ethics support services (CESS) are widely considered to have three key functions: case consultation, policy, and education. In this workshop, we will use two case studies to consider how racism – at individual and structural levels – may present to CESS, through their various functions.
Caring for a pregnant patient: This case will focus specifically on access to maternity care and consider the potential inequity that may (not) be evident through current methods of case consultation. Amongst the issues discussed will be whether and how to hear directly from patients during case consultation, and how far CESS’ role in advocacy should extend.
Caring for a “difficult” patient: This case will explore the challenges posed by caring for so-called “difficult” patients, and how CESS can and should respond to requests for advice in these scenarios.
The workshop will be facilitated by people with lived experience, researchers, and advocates – all of whom have experience of engaging with social justice issues in healthcare – and discussion around these cases will explore the role CESS could play in addressing inequity in clinical practice.
Who is the workshop for?
This workshop is primarily for members of UK Clinical Ethics Committees.

What are the fees to attend?
The workshop is free to attend for members of committees that are paid-up members of UKCEN (i.e., a subscribing committee that has paid its annual fee). As places are limited and we aim to allow members from diverse committees to attend, limits may need to be placed on the numbers of delegates attending from an individual committee – we will provide further information if the need arises.
Individuals who serve on a committee that is not a subscribing member of UKCEN will be charged £60 to attend the workshop.
Individuals who are not serving on committees are also welcome to attend, subject to availability. Such individuals will be charged £60 to attend the workshop.
